Our History
Warwick Assembly of God was established in 1953 under the name Warwick Full Gospel Assembly. The founding pastor was John Slye, a pioneer preacher. The first service was held in a storefront at the corner of Terrace Drive and Harpersville Road, with 33 people attending.
The church was set in order as a dependent assembly affiliated with the Potomac District of the Assemblies of God in 1956. Julian Goggins became pastor in 1957. They purchased property at 504 Harpersville Road and erected a cinder block building – the new home of Warwick Assembly of God.
From 1959 to 1970, Leroy Howe served as pastor and under his leadership the church continued to grow.
Rev. James Cheshier and his wife Phyllis followed as pastors in 1970, with 35 members and an attendance of 85. The church grew and in 1972, became a local assembly of the General Council of the Assemblies of God. It had 54 members and a Sunday morning attendance of 175. Because of continued growth, the church facilities became over-crowded. Consequently, the congregation began a new church plant in the Denbigh section of Newport News.
Continued growth over the years resulted in several additions being made to the Harpersville property including an activity building, and educational building, and a larger sanctuary. The attendance reached 750 in two morning services with 650 in Sunday school. In 1991 Pastor Cheshier retired.
From 1991 to 1998, Pastor Jack Sallie and his wife Ann served the congregation. During Pastor Sallie’s ministry the State of Virginia purchased the Harpersville Road church property under eminent domain for an East-West expressway.
From 1998 to 2006, Pastor Greg Cox and his wife Bonnie served the congregation of Warwick Assembly. Under his leadership the church relocated to the current Hampton facility and in the fall of 2001, Warwick Assembly once again planted a new congregation in Williamsburg, Virginia.
In January 2007, Pastor Keith Frix and his wife Sheila began serving the congregation of Warwick Assembly of God. Pastor Keith has charged the "four generations" of our congregation with the task of taking the message of God into the streets of our local community and throughout the world to spread the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
